Fifty-year old Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) conducts the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra in this 1958 performance of the first movement of Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. 550. I created this music video from the LP depicted above, RCA Victor, serial number LDA 2347.
The painting you will see in the video is of the Schönbrunn Palace (the former summer residence of the Austrian emperor and the place where, as music director in the employ of the Esterházy court, Joseph Haydn premiered many of his works), by the Italian artist Bernardo Bellotto (1720-1780).
Movement 1: Allegro molto
Movement 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QA_98Gx0jw
Movement 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYCGuiB5Gz0
So that no question arises in the minds of those listening to this recording, I rely for images on the LP label (full image is at 2:16) and jacket (full image, 4:56) to document the authenticity of important and extremely rare performances such as this.
At the end of this video are several images taken from the notes that accompany this album.
